Mein Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki

Every Hindu Home has a Tulsi plant. Here the writer speaks of the medicinal values of the plant. This is a veritable medical shop in our Hindu homes. No home is complete without this plant. Morning and evening every devout Hindu wife waters and cherishes this plant as the ‘Goddess of Home’ with the faith that it would bring prosperity along with its green shoots.

Every prayer, vratham, is incomplete without the Tulsi. How and why has the plant acquired this unique honoured place in our homes? From times immemorial, this plant was known for its medicinal value. For Hindus “Tulsi a day keeps the doctor away.”

Its Innumerable values cannot be easily gauged. The big built Brahmin Pujari keeps us wondering as to how he manages to avoid all the common ailments, which overwhelm us. Well, the secret is the Tulsi.

The Brahmin takes the Tulsi leaf morning and evening as part of his devotional duties. It is a tonic, blood purifier, a stimulant and appetizer, an antibiotic, and liver controller all rolled in one. No wonder a man who takes this leaf as a habit of being healthy.

There are two varieties of Tulsi. The white Laxmi Tulsi, the black or the Krishna Tulsi. It is the black variety which is very valuable. Having it in our homes is as good as having a medical shop.

FOR FEVERS: The Tulsi leaves contain a juice which is hot and pungent. This juice contains anti-fever properties; it controls the juice of the liver, and has active stimulating properties. The tulsi juice given with powdered black pepper controls fever effectively; the cure can be hastened when the juice is applied all over the body.

Once again, in the case of unconsciousness when the pulse is dropping and the heart beat is weak, the juice mixed with ginger juice and given at half-hour intervals is known to work wonders.

For influenza, a concoction of Tulsi leaves. Elaichi, lavang, and cinnamon made into a hot drink mixed with sugar and milk is very effective. This makes the patient perspire and the fever comes down; body aches which are common to this fever are reduced and the cold disappears perceptibly.

In the case of chronic coughs, the juice mixed with the juice of garlic and honey is a very effective remedy, this should be given regularly morning and evening. 

Small children who have worm trouble should be given a spoonful of this juice morning and evening regularly for a fort-night.

BITES: For snake bites give two spoonfuls every half hour till the patient recovers consciousness. Meanwhile, the juice should be applied to the whole body with an extra dose to the bitten area. This can be used to advantage in the case of other poisonous insects like the scorpion, etc.

Ear aches can be reduce effectively by nourishing a little of this juice into the ear every half hour. It comes in very handy especially when children are not feeling well, and helps them to be at ease.
